ASN.1 GENERAL-STRING data type.

This is an 8-bit encoded ISO 646 (ASCII) character set with optional escapes to other character sets.

Parameters:

Returns:

a DERBMPString instance, or null.

getInstance

Deprecated. Use ASN1GeneralString.getInstance(ASN1TaggedObject, boolean) instead.

Return a GeneralString from a tagged object.

Parameters:

obj - the tagged object holding the object we want

explicit - true if the object is meant to be explicitly tagged false otherwise.

Returns:

a DERGeneralString instance.

Throws:

java.lang.IllegalArgumentException - if the tagged object cannot be converted.
